M has blossomed over the last year, his speech has burst through as if his words were water being held back by a dam. At times though, when he is under pressure to speak, his words are a little stilted. He can lack intonation and fluidity, yet his sheer determination to speak is shining through. This morning as he spoke over the microphone at church, he reminded me of a poem I once read from Spike Milligan's anthology 'Hidden Words.'
Child Song
"There is a song in man
There is a song in woman
And that is the child’s song
When that song comes
There will be no words
Do not ask where they are
Just listen to the song
Listen to it-
Learn it-
It is the greatest song of all."
